ABOUT
Future Family Law

WHAT WE’RE ALL ABOUT
Future Family Law will take you through the complexity of family law and separation.
We serve real people with real problems and strive to provide solutions in a compassionate, supportive and future focused way through your separation journey.
Separation is like a roller coaster – you can’t get off until the ride is finished. You have to strap in, endure the twists and turns, sometimes it is intense and sometimes bumpy and sometimes smooth and exhilarating – my job as your lawyer is to help, empower and guide you through the process so you can make decisions that help you move on with your life.
At Future Family Law we can’t make the decisions for you, nor can we control what the other party is doing, BUT we can assist by giving you options, knowledge and strategy to navigate and hopefully shorten the journey. We strive to keep amicable co-parenting relationships respectful and intact and provide financial independence, confidence and empowerment.
We believe that there is always light at the end of the tunnel – sometimes the tunnel is longer than we think, but there is always a light.
At Future Family Law we promise to provide:
- Positive and empowering solutions to resolve the financial and parenting conflict following separation.
- Realistic, non-judgmental, practical advice and solutions to separation problems.
- Out of the box thinking and inclusive option generation.
- Strategic thinking taking into account the human (“non-legal”) elements to a separation.
- Care and understanding about the uniqueness of every separation and the individual dynamics of each relationship.
- Concise plain English communication.
- Frank and realistic cost benefit analysis of every potential solution.
- Holistic and complimentary referrals to assist our clients to move forward post separation.
MEET
Our team
My name is Selena James. I am the Practice Director of Future Family Law. Since 2006 I have been practising exclusively in family law, and I am deeply passionate about the work and the outcomes for my clients.
People often ask me why family law? For me, it is the human element, the journey and the wonderful people I meet through my work. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing a client blossom, learn and grow into an independent, confident and secure person through the process and into the happy future they deserve. Knowing they are completely different to the lost and broken person that sat in the initial consultation, gives me immense satisfaction in my work.
Throughout the early 2000’s, I worked in general practice covering areas such as conveyancing, property development, criminal law, leasing, wills and estate planning and mortgage advice. This experience provided me with invaluable and essential knowledge to hone my niche in family law.
I am a country girl, I grew up in Central Queensland and have worked across different regions of Australia including Perth and the Sunshine Coast before becoming a North Brisbane local. The various moves provided me with exposure to outstanding mentors and some exceptional firms and colleagues from whom I have learnt and grown over the years. This has given me firm resolve about how I want to practice family law and who I can best assist with the family law process.

The slogan “Real people, real problems, real solutions” derives from my values and ethos. I am empathetic and compassionate, but also realistic and practical in my advice and dealings with my clients. I am also strong, respectful and collaborative with opponents. My goal is to empower my clients to navigate their way through what is often a rocky road fraught with many challenges both emotionally, financially and practically, resulting in a happy and conflict-free future.
I also believe that fixed fees are achievable and that the structure provides clients with certainty and flexibility. This fee arrangement also fosters efficiency in the way we deliver outcomes for our clients.

Client feedback
At future family law we value our client experience as much as we value our clients
Thanks for your support and guidance on Monday. You have made this process almost enjoyable 🙂
I wake each morning feeling a great weight lifted from me.
I would highly recommend Selena to handle your family law matters. Regardless of the complexity of any case, she will deliver and won’t back down from bullies, intimidation and threats. Thank you once again Selena for your help. I cannot thank you enough for helping me get control back of my life. I am now starting a new life and starting to calm down a bit and enjoy life as it should be.
Thank you very much for how amazingly smooth this whole proceeding has been. Much appreciated.
Thanks so much, Selena. You really have been such a rock in all of this for me and I am very glad I decided on your firm. We did pretty well, in terms of what we were up against. The world needs strong women like you on their side, so thank you. Thank you for choosing your profession and being a woman of integrity in the process. Speaks volumes.
All the best, sincerely. Has been quite the journey and one that will forever be part of my story.
Thankyou for your help it’s been invaluable but if the silly moo had just agreed to this in august we could have avoided all this, that said, I wouldn’t now have a brilliant family lawyer to recommend to my friends.
Thank you for everything you done on Friday, you made me feel relaxed while we worked through the financial & parenting agreements. I am so glad I walked away from my previous solicitor & found you.
